SDA stands for Specialist Disability Accommodation. It is housing for NDIS participants: with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA homes contain accessible features to help participants live more independently and allow other supports to be delivered better or more safely.
In 2010, the Australian Government asked the Productivity Commission to carry out a public inquiry into a long term disability care and support scheme
The productivity commission received more than 1000 submissions from people with disabilities and the disability sector. The messages were clear, the existing system didn’t work
Therefore, the NDIS was created. It began trials in 2013 and was introduced across Australia in 2016 by the Gillard government
